Damp Moisture Condensation

How To Do-Away With Damp
Damp is a real nuisance inside the home and left untreated can be responsible for some serious and expensive problems. But by just understanding the main principles of what causes damp you can make some quite substantial differences and improvements in your home.
If you notice that the paint has bubbled slightly and there is some white marks it often mean that water is coming through the brick from outside the house. This is the efflorescence from the salt content of the water. Popular causes include blocked guttering, blocked drainage and every measure should be taken to direct rain and waste water away from the house. If the situation doesn't markedly improve its best to call the experts in so that any further damage can be prevented. If you see any water marks it may well be down to a leaking roof. Condensation can also be a factor that causes damp problems. This is a particular problem in bathrooms and kitchens where there is more moisture in the air. Condensation occurs when moisture in the air meets a cold surface. Where ventilation is poor such as behind furniture and corners, mould spores may grow.
Good ventilation will encourage the movement of air around the house, reducing the amount of moisture concentrated inside. Windows in the bathroom for example should always be open when high pressure showers are used due the amount of steam created. However although this is fine when the weather is warm it's a bit more difficult in the winter months.
The best way to reduce damp from condensation is to remove some of the moisture from the air. A dehumidifier does precisely this, drawing out moisture and restoring humidity in the home to normal levels.
A home that's well heated will reduce the amount of moisture in the air and the resulting amount damp problems experienced. Oil filled radiators can be a very efficient way to heat a home. They dont have to be wall fitted or expensive. They are easy to maintain and portable models are available.
Simple steps like purchasing dehumidifiers for the home, ventilate, insulate and sufficient heating should be enough to keep your house nice and dry.
