Ways To Tell If Your Home Heating Oil Is Leaking
Most people will use their heating oil system year after year without there ever being a problem. There is not much maintenance involved in a heating oil system apart from a regular check to make sure it is running ok. However occasionally some people do encounter problems with their heating oil system. One thing that can happen is that you could get a leak somewhere in the system. An oil leak can cause big problems so it is important that you know what to look for and deal with the situation straight away.
How To Know If You Have An Oil Leak
Do not think that it is a crisis situation if you experience an oil leak in your system. It is not likely to be pouring out of your tank like you might expect from seeing an oil well tapped in a movie. Most people first notice that they have an oil leak because their consumption of oil takes a dramatic increase even though their heating requirements have not changed at all. If you are not using more oil but it is disappearing then you have two possibilities. It is either that you have a leak or your oil is being stolen.
If you notice oil around the outside of your tank or anywhere else in the system it is reasonable to assume that you may have a leak. Oil travels to your boiler via a pipe which could get a leak anywhere. And if you can't access your pipe because it is hidden, then you could have a leak for quite a while before you realise.
It is never a good thing to have oil leaking anywhere in your system so if you spot a leak you should make contact immediately with your supplier. Oil is generally safe but it can do a lot of harm to the environment. This is especially true if you are near flowing water. If your oil spill is quite big it may be necessary for you to call for professional help.
Getting the home heated up during winter can be very expensive. Gas and electricity are very expensive today, with no signs of prices coming down.
