Speed Up Windows XP Boot – Two Solutions
So far, Windows XP is considered the best OS because of its good speed and its brilliant visual enhancements. It boasts of start up speed as fast as 30 seconds from the time the computer is turned on until it shows up the desktop and performance could get better depending on the specs of the computers. But not a few people find the need to speed up Windows XP boot. This is because these same factors – decent features and higher system overhead - make it a very slow OS, if not properly fixed.
If you don’t update your drives often and keep up with the latest technologies, you will find that Windows XP could be a bit upsetting. The good thing is, there are plenty of solutions that can speed up XP's boot up time.
De-clutter the list of programs that are initialized during boot up.
Like the contents of a cabinet, your pc gets packed up with files and programs as it is used. Your hard disk which used to be clean is now running on below 15% free disk space and your windows startup folder which used to have very few of files in it is now packed with files of newly installed programs. If you are like some people who install practically everything in their computer, you are most likely to end up with a machine that takes decades to boot.
The good things is, the solution to a congested pc is easy – decongest it, removers all the unnecessary files in it. To do this, click START, hit RUN and use the MSCONFIG tool, from there disable all programs that you don’t want initializing while your pc boots up. To fully remove these from the pc, go to the Startup folder and right click the box next to the program's name. If your computer has entries in the Scheduled Tasks folder, disable programs that you don’t want to run automatically according to a set schedule.
It is also not a bad idea to manually remove the shortcuts of the programs that run during startup in the Services folder. Many software developers, to guarantee that their programs don’t lag once they are clicked, design them to run in the background. These services are programs that aid the OS or provide background support to particular applications. Now, these could be set to initialize during boot up, thereby consuming processing time and delaying the time for the pc to fully boot up. Changing the settings of these services through altering the contents of the Services tab will easily solve this problem. When you're not sure if deleting a certain service will negatively affect your pc's performance, check out the services management console and check.
Tip: If you are not sure what you are dealing with, don’t touch anything.
Disable the Surplus Hardware Devices.
There are plenty of hardware devices that line up during startup. Some of these, you use, some you don’t. While Windows XP developers had already figured out a smart way to load all of these devices at once in a parallel setup – previous OS used to initialize individual hardware devices separately, one after another – chances are still quite high that this will affect boot up speed. Use the Device Manager tool to manage the devices that you are not really using.
Apparently, there are a lot of things you can do to bog down your pc and to speed up Windows XP boot. And a few little changes here and there can automatically speed up your pc.
