We have the original HVAC units in place on a home built in 1991 and the blower blew out in the furnace. Previously we have had no problems (not a one) with the system. The piece is available online for $350.
I called in a local HVAC company, well advertised in the area, and they quoted me $8900 for a complete replacement system (including A/C, Furnace, etc.). The equipment is from a company called Goodman and includes a variable speed furnace, coil, and air conditioning unit. All ducts in the home are good. (I have found the exact equipment available online from http://www.acdirect.com for $2,700).
What should I do?
Call a different company.
First of all, the blower motor is replacable for a couple hundred bucks including labor. No need to replace whole system.
Second of all, the brand name Goodman stinks. Do not go with Goodman or Janitrol. If you do have the replace the whole friggen system, go with a repitable name like York, Carrier, Bryant, or Trane.
Not sure how big your house is, but $8900 sounds like a big rip off to me.
I have gotten several quotes from reputable area HVAC providers that have had several thousands of dollars between them. It pays to shop around.
