How To Make A Small Bedroom Seem Larger
In many homes, one bedroom is quite a bit smaller than the rest. Some seem so tiny that you are hard pressed to find a place for the necessary furniture. Items such as game systems, televisions, and desks may have to be left out of the design. Luckily, however, there are tricks that can help create the impression that a bedroom is more spacious than it actually is.
The furniture is the most important part of any room. A full size loft bed can sleep two comfortably or one in luxury. With the sleeping platform elevated, the floor space below can be used for other purposes. You can place a desk, a futon, or bookcases underneath the bed, thus making the same area serve double duty.
Opt for a chest rather than a dresser, which will require more floor space. Keep the chest in scale with the room rather than choosing a towering piece that will just make everything feel more crowded. Or dispense with such pieces altogether by using closet organizers to hold items that would normally have been stored in the chest.
Use a mirror on the wall as both an aid to grooming and to lighten up the room, which will make it seem larger. Choose a style that does not have a frame at all or that only has a narrow band of metal around the edges. It does not matter whether you opt for an oval or rectangular shape, since either will serve the purpose. However, you should not try to place a stand mirror on the floor of a small room.
You can brighten up your room with your choice of a bedding collection. Large or dark prints can make the whole room feel smaller, as can an unbroken area, like a bed, that is perfectly coordinated. Lighter shades in either solids or small prints work the best, especially when they are combined.
A quilt set can be an easy way to dress up the bed in a small room. Look for patterns that have a prominent ecru background and limited use of colors such as burgundy, hunter green, or dark blue. Another good choice of quilts would be a white or ecru background that features small embroidered designs rather than patchwork.
Use wall art and accessories sparingly. If there is very much hung on the walls, it makes the room feel much smaller. An abundance of accessories makes it harder to keep things cleaned and dusted and add a cluttered look. Uncluttered areas seem larger, so keep things put away, preferably stored out of sight.
By planning ahead, you will be able to make a tiny room feel much more spacious. Consider what impact the colors, lighting, and scale will have, and it will be easier to design a functional, cheerful room.
