The images in a digital video recorder are usually in AVI, JPEG, or other video compression algorithms such as MPEG4, which are perfect for faster processing and storage of data.
Time Lapse VCR
What is a time lapse VCR? A time lapse VCR has almost the same qualities as the digital video recorder except that it can be programmed to take images in pulses and at specific number of hours or time of the day on certain days of the week. This feature of the time lapse VCR allows recording time to be extended. It is also quite easy to program your time lapse VCR. You can choose to let the unit record continuously for 6 or 8 hours; then let it record the remaining hours of the day every few minutes or so.
The time options for the programming of the time lapse VCR unit are available upon purchase. This can be used to your advantage as you can schedule the time lapse VCR to record continuous action, say, for the hours that your establishment is open on weekdays, for the rest of the day, and for weekends. You do not need to input this command every day as the time lapse VCR has a memory function.

Between digital video recorder and time lapse VCR, which is better? Ultimately, your needs will determine which unit is better, but also consider the manufacturer of the unit and it's memory capability/capacity.
