Is Office Air Conditioning An Overated Luxury?
Don't get me wrong. There are huge benefits to be had from installing an air conditioning unit in the office. Thinking about it one of the most obvious reasons that springs to mind is how much they make life more bearable during the summer months. This a period when even the most hardy office workers are likely to suffer. Especially in an office with a server and computer network where the machines can generate a lot of heat. Opening the nearest window simply won't do as you may have discovered from experience! Then it is patently obvious that you place of work requires an air con unit to spread cool air evenly.
Is this an idealistic fantasy or just plain realistic? Given that in the UK the summer only lasts a couple of months if lucky then how are we going to fair with the remaining ten? I'm sure the costs of an air conditioning installation could work out to be expensive for long term usage. With heat and fuel costs rising continually it simply doesn't make the lives of business owners any easier upon reciept of an energy bill. Home working is probably one of the options that they have thought of giving staff once or twice because of it!
Once the air conditioning system has been installed we must not forget that it has to be regulary maintained. Using the system for three months tops you can imagine the frustration of paying an air conditioning maintenance expense on top? When you can use office fans to dissipate the heat the heat in the office it doesn't seem that financially viable to me. It would be better to invest in a portable air conditioner for a small romm. Leasing is often seen as the cheaper solution and easier on cash flow. Really it all comes down to estimating the size of the area that you wish to air condition. You have to ask yourself whether air conditioning is a luxury that your business can afford?
Classes and academic research help launch companies (MIT)
_Second in a two-part series examining MIT’s entrepreneurial climate._ _Read
part one here._
Over the years, MIT students have created an array of clubs, workshops and
competitions to foster entrepreneurship and help those who aim to start
businesses. Increasingly, though, entrepreneurship is not just an
extracurricular activity but — in many cases — an integral part of students’
academic work. In other cases, student research ends up becoming the core of a
spinoff company.
Across the Institute’s schools and departments, a wide variety of classes are
aimed not only at fostering the skills needed to start and manage a business,
but also at generating or fine-tuning ideas, helping develop them into real-
world companies. Many of these classes — with titles such as “Development
Ventures,” “Energy Ventures” and “Imaging Ventures” — encourage students to
form teams and start developing ideas and business plans over the course of a
semester. In many cases, these spontaneously formed teams go on to create
actual businesses.
Joost Bonsen ’90, SM ’06, a lecturer in the MIT Media Lab, teaches many such
classes and co-directs (with Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences Alex
“Sandy” Pentland PhD ’82) the Media Lab’s entrepreneurship program. ...
