Watching Films Outdoors From London Hotels

During the last few years, there has been a big rise in the number of London outdoor film cinemas, a popular tourist attraction. In spite of the vagaries of the London weather, filmgoers avidly check the cinema’s listings to see what films are on. So it makes sense whilst booking a stay in one of the London hotels to also book a ticket for one of these open-air screenings With the number of outdoor cinemas in London now, there’s sure to be a film being shown that would suit even the most discerning movie buff.

The Film4 Summer Screen which is at Somerset House, seems to be one of the most popular. The screenings take place in the impressive neo-classic courtyard and booking is essential. Films scheduled for this year are the famous ‘Thelma and Louise’ and ‘The Apartment’ and the UK premiere of Pedro Almodovar’s  critically acclaimed thriller ‘The Skin I Live In’.

The 1,000 seat amphitheatre, located near Tower Bridge and hosted by The Scoop, is another very popular outdoor cinema venue. The popularity derives from the fact that it’s in a fashionable location, no booking is required and it’s free. Many regular filmgoers to this venue, make sure they dress warmly and take an extra blanket along as it does get chilly. If the weather is bad, the event is often cancelled, so check ahead to avoid disappointment.

From June to September, the pub ‘The Queen of Hoxton’ in fashionable Shoreditch, stages the Rooftop Film Club, a good reason to book into one ‘s of the area’s hotels in London. The film’s dialogue is crystal clear with the latest technology and wireless headphones so that you will be able to hear everything in spite of the noise from the traffic.

The Nomad travelling cinema travels across London’s many parks putting on film screenings. The huge inflatable screen will be showing a range of family-friendly films this summer including’ Wall-E’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in some of the coolest parks, from Regent’s to Richmond. Book into any of London’s cheap hotels and you know you won’t be far from one of the al-fresco cinemas. Take a picnic along and really make it an outdoor event.

What would be the best sound and vibration insulator for a rooftop air conditioner?

I have a small commercial AC condenser for what i think must be a freezer in the store below me, on my roof about 80lbs which does not have vents underneath it, so it can rest on pretty much anything. I have tried lifting it on rubber pads, insulating it with blankets underneath, and everything in between. Everything works a little bit, but not perfect. I am thinking now, an entire mattress underneath it? Maybe a layer of bricks? I really am running out of materials to try. Wood only made it worse, as did the special plastic lifts that the AC guy tried out. I have about 6-8 inches under the unit, and at least 3 feet around it to maybe lay something down to insulate the sound from going down around it.

Sound isolation is very complicated, involving resonances in all of the parts involved, and lots of other factors.

You need to find out the spectrum of the sound that gets through and work towards isolating that.

Your final solution may well be a combination of things, each one adding a bit to the final solution.

Bricks would not help, they provide zero sound isolation. A mattress sounds good, but what happens when it rains? or snows? How do you support the thing from sliding (or is this a flat roof?)
